Ippodo Tea

Gokujo Houjicha

Regular price ₱450.00

Gokujo is a mellow and flavorful houjicha and is one of Ippodo's most popular teas. It boasts a remarkably sweet aroma while being light bodied and refreshing, which makes it a great everyday tea. The subtle bitterness and umami adds balance to its sweet and roasty profile - a great tea on its own or to accompany a meal.

We recommend this as an introduction to houjicha.

Gokujo is a refreshing, nutty, and sweet houjicha that can be taken hot or iced, or even mixed in to make a houjicha latte.

We usually have it iced and often crave for it during sunny afternoons.

Hot
240ml 96-100ºC (Off the boil) Water
10g Gokujo Houjicha

> Pour 240ml of off the boil water (96-100ºC) onto 10g of Gokujo Houjicha. Steep for 30 seconds before straining (fine mesh/tea strainer) into a pre-heated tea cup/tea pot.

* Recommended to pre-heat brewer, tea pot, and tea cup beforehand. Tea can be steeped for a second time with 150ml for another 30 seconds but will be a bit lighter than the first infusion. Over extraction (oversteeping or using water above 100ºC) may cause additional bitterness in the extraction.

Iced
150ml 96-100ºC (Off the boil) Water
10g Gokujo Houjicha
90g Ice

> Pour 150ml of off the boil water (96-100ºC) onto 10g of Gokujo Houjicha. Steep for 30 seconds before straining (fine mesh/tea strainer) into a separate container with 90g of ice (avoid plastic and glass containers). Stir the brewed houjicha with ice before pouring into a glass with additional ice.

* Recommended to pre-heat the brewer beforehand. Avoid using plastic or glass to mix the initial iced houjicha as hot temperatures will affect plastic while quick changes in temperature may break glass. Tea can be steeped for a second time with 100ml for another 30 seconds but will be a bit lighter than the first infusion. You may add 50g of ice to be mixed afterwards. Over extraction (oversteeping or using water above 100ºC) may cause additional bitterness in the extraction.
